How Your Exact Age in Years, Months, and Days Is Calculated

Calculating age sounds simple — but doing it accurately requires three careful steps that handle varying month lengths and leap years correctly.

Step 1 — Full years: Count the complete years elapsed since your birth year. If today's month and day fall before your birthday in the current year, subtract one (your birthday hasn't happened yet this year).

Step 2 — Remaining months: After removing full years, count the remaining whole months. If today's day is earlier than your birth day, subtract one month and carry the days over into step 3.

Step 3 — Remaining days: Count the days left over. Because months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, this step always uses the actual length of the preceding month — which is why manual calculation is error-prone.

Leap year handling: If you were born on February 29, the calculator counts your birthday as March 1 in non-leap years when computing age. This follows the legal standard used in most US states.

Age Milestones Worth Celebrating

Beyond the standard birthday, there are some remarkable numerical milestones hidden in your lifespan that most people never notice — until someone points them out.

10,000 days: The most popular milestone. It falls around age 27 years and 4 months. Many people celebrate it as an unofficial "second birthday" — sharing the exact date on social media or marking it with something meaningful.

1 billion seconds: One billion seconds of being alive occurs at roughly 31 years and 9 months old. It has a satisfying weight to it — a billion of anything is a big number.

Why milestones in days matter: Unlike birthdays that come once a year, day-based milestones are spread throughout your life. There's a quiet satisfaction in knowing exactly how many days you've been alive — a number that ticks upward every single morning.

Frequently Asked Questions About Age Calculation

Straight answers to the most common age calculator questions.

Enter your date of birth above and click Calculate — you'll see your exact age in years, months, and days instantly. The calculator accounts for leap years and varying month lengths, so the result is always accurate to the day.
The total days figure in the result is the exact number of calendar days between your date of birth and today. For example, someone born on January 1, 1990 is 13,287 days old on May 18, 2026. The result panel also converts this into total weeks, approximate hours, and approximate minutes.
Manually: (1) Find the full years between your birth year and today, subtracting one if today's date hasn't reached your birthday this year. (2) Count remaining whole months. (3) Count remaining days, using the actual length of the previous month. Because months differ in length (28–31 days), this is error-prone by hand — that's exactly what this calculator is for.
Enter your date of birth and click Calculate. The fun facts panel will show the exact day of the week — for example, "You were born on a Wednesday." The calculation uses the Gregorian calendar and is accurate for any date after October 15, 1582.
After entering your date of birth and clicking Calculate, the result shows your next birthday date and exactly how many days away it is. If today is your birthday, it shows 365 (or 366 in a leap year) days to next year's birthday.
Use the "Calculate age on" field. Set it to any future date — such as January 1, 2030 — enter your date of birth, and click Calculate. The result will show your exact age on that future date in years, months, and days. This is useful for retirement planning, milestone tracking, or simple curiosity.
How we keep this accurate: Age calculation on this page follows the standard Gregorian calendar used globally for civil and legal purposes. Leap years are handled correctly for all dates from 1600 onward. February 29 birthdays are treated as March 1 in non-leap years, consistent with the legal standard in most US states.
